Garmin Forerunner 205 GPS Receiver and Sports Watch
I have been waiting for the introduction of the latest Garmin GPS Sports Watch for a while. I came to be out window shopping last wednesday and I opted to buy it instead of waiting for a sample to review.
It’s particularly important for people to maintain a check on his or her performance they exercise. Purchasing a sports watch with GPS capability may well be the best investments that anybody can make, particularly when buying the Garmin Forerunner 205, which specifically I would advise to everybody.
Based on its great features I will also be buying a Garmin Forerunner 205 for my partner due to the fact it has all the capabilities she needs and in any case she would always purchase Garmin products if possible.
- Virtual Partner function to make workouts as competitive as you want them
- This acts as a one-piece training assistant giving athletes their accurate speed, distance and pace data
- Made by a trusted brand
- GPS receiver has high-sensitivity thus providing exceptional signal reception
- Can be used for multiple sports, such as cycling, cross-country skiing and windsurfing
- The package includes training center software so that you can download workout data for a detailed analysis later
A must for every runner and Cyclist
While I appreciate that the 205 doesn’t offer heart rate monitoring, it is more than worthy as an inclusion here because it is such a great way to get basic GPS location and performance data while on the move. It is equally useful whether you are a runner, cyclist – or even a hiker. Having opened the package all you need to do is turn it on and it will lock on to the satellites within about three minutes. On subsequent uses of the 205, satellite acquisition is nearly instantaneous. In order to test it out before running, a quick test while driving shows the speed, distance and elevation and allows you to check out the various features. There is a slight lag of a second or so but that is to be expected and as soon as you reach a steady speed the accuracy is spot on. Comparing altitude against Google Maps also verified that everything was right.
Testing it Out
When you take it out for a run or cycle for the first time you will soon see what an invaluable gadget this is to have. It helps you to maintain a steady pace whether you are on flat ground or up and down hill, as well as telling you how far you have gone. You don’t just use it out on the road, either. When you get back home it really comes into its own. You simply upload your history into the Garmin Training Center. This free software from Garmin tells you all you need to know about your run or cycle. It will show your time, pace, average speed, max speed, calories burned, and elevation (descent and ascent) not only over the run as a whole but also breaks it down for each mile. The mapping part of the software is also excellent as well as being extraordinarily accurate. I heard about someone who would run a circle around a couple of trees in his garden and it would plot that with perfect accuracy.
Garmin Forerunner 205 Has Great Features
First of all let’s look at GPS Accuracy. The Forerunner 205 has no trouble locking on to the satellite signals even inside the house. This is a big improvement on previous models. The Forerunner 205 will remain locked even when passing through dense woodland. It is also more comfortable wear than older models such as the 201. The plastic strap for example is more comfortable than the 201′s velco strap and despite the size of the 205 it is easy to forget that you are wearing it. There is also an extension strap should you want to wear it outside your clothing. The start/stop and lap buttons are well sized and easy to use on the face of the watch.
The Virtual Partner function makes your workouts more competitive and you can choose from three workout modes that help you target your training goals.
Customization is another great feature of the 205. You can set up 2 main screens as well as an activity-specific one with 1 to 4 data fields per screen. So you can customize screens and settings without interrupting your current activity. The Forerunner 205 is very good when it comes to ‘real-time’ pacing, being much more stable and accurate than the older versions.
For connectivity there is the USB Cradle which allows charging and uploading via USB which makes things very simple. USB uploading is very fast.
Easy to Read and Configure the Screen
If you don’t like the default screens the main screen can easily be reconfigured. For example you can set up the screen to show average pace, elapsed time and total distance. The average pace setting is probably better and a more useful figure than the instantaneous pace. Overall the Forerunner 205 gives you all the information you could need while out exercising.
What’s in the Box
In the box you get the Forerunner 205 GPS unit and the USB docking cradle. The Training Center software comes on a CD-ROM. The accessories comprise an AC charger, USB cable and a wrist strap. The quick-start guide and user’s manual tell you everything you need to know about its operation and customization.
Garmin Forerunner 205 Summary
Whether you are a runner or cyclist or both you will wonder how you managed without the Garmin Forerunner 205. You can choose from 12 data fields to display on the 205′s screen. This is a waterproof design that feels as comfortable to wear as any sports watch. Curves casing allow the unit’s antenna to face the sky when you’re running. The widescreen display make viewing easy whenever you need it.
The right side buttons of the 205 allow access to the menu selection and enter functions, while the left side has the power/backlight button and a mode button.
The Virtual Partner function is one of the most popular features. If you perform best when you’ve got a competitor then this is perfect for you as it lets you set up virtual running or cycling companions that compete against you.
For complicated workouts with a variety of intervals and intensity levels just use the Workouts feature and you can use three options: Quick Workouts, Interval and Advanced Workout. These allow you to set up a variety of distance, time, speed and interval settings for your workouts. If you want 5 minutes rest between stages, just program it in, it’s as simple as that. The ability of the Training Center software to track historical performance on a given course is a great way to measure your improvement…Buy NOW

Latest heart rate monitor reviews on video:
Just doing a quick compare review between the garmin forerunner 205/305 & 405. I just noticed that I say “other than that”, ha! Anyway, this is just a quick overview since the 205 are still available and much cheaper than the 405′s and some of the features I mention have been brought up when I go to run club. Also note that I’m saying 301 instead of 205 which was the previous generation of the Forerunner.
